Extending the Arduino Edge AI Journey with SOM-SMARC-Dragonwing-IQ8

Discover how Arduino® VENTUNO™ Q board, Qualcomm Dragonwing™ IQ8 Series processors and SECO can help preserve software continuity and accelerate validated AI applications toward industrial Edge AI deployment.

For robotics and Physical AI teams, a validated prototype represents more than working hardware. By the time an application performs as expected, engineering teams have already invested in AI models, application logic, development workflows, and the expertise needed to make those elements work together.

The next step should therefore not mean starting again. The challenge is to preserve as much of that engineering investment as possible, wherever hardware and software dependencies allow, while creating the foundation needed for an industrial Edge AI platform.

A common Dragonwing IQ8 foundation creates continuity

VENTUNO Q aims to provide a platform for rapid application development and validation. SOM-SMARC-Dragonwing-IQ8 is built to bring Dragonwing IQ8 Series technology into an industrial system-on-module designed for embedded products.

Using the same technology family across these stages helps reduce unnecessary discontinuity. Teams can move forward without changing the underlying compute technology simply because the application is progressing beyond its initial validation environment.

This does not mean that everything developed during prototyping transfers unchanged. Depending on hardware and software dependencies, AI models, high-level application logic, and established development workflows may continue to provide value as the platform evolves.

The advantage is therefore not a one-to-one migration, but a common technology foundation designed to help engineering teams build on previously validated work rather than repeating portions of the development process.

From Arduino App Lab to SOM-SMARC-Dragonwing-IQ8

The workflow starts with an application already developed and validated on VENTUNO Q using Arduino® App Lab. That working configuration becomes the baseline for the next stage, allowing teams to preserve the application behavior they have already verified before introducing a new target environment.

Once validated, the application can be exported from Arduino App Lab as an App Release. This package carries the application code, dependencies, and AI assets, providing a handoff point between the Arduino development environment and the industrial deployment flow.

The exported App Release is then transferred through Clea to SOM-SMARC-Dragonwing-IQ8, where the same workload can be run and compared against the VENTUNO Q baseline. This provides a practical portability checkpoint: the validated application can serve as the software reference, while target-specific elements such as camera access, device resources, and platform configuration are evaluated separately on the SECO system.

Different platforms, complementary roles

Arduino, Qualcomm Technologies, and SECO play complementary roles across the same engineering path.

VENTUNO Q is designed to support rapid prototyping, application development, and validation in a familiar development environment. Dragonwing IQ8 Series is structured to provide the common AI compute technology underpinning both stages. SECO is added to extend this path with SOM-SMARC-Dragonwing-IQ8, an industrial SMARC platform backed by embedded engineering expertise.

SOM-SMARC-Dragonwing-IQ8 is based on SMARC® Rel. 2.2 and is built to provide AI acceleration of up to 40 TOPS, industrial connectivity, and a modular architecture for industrial design-in and platform scalability.

Each platform aims to address a different need within a connected development process: rapid application development and validation with VENTUNO Q, a common Dragonwing IQ8 technology foundation, and an industrial hardware platform from SECO for integration into the final product.

Within the Works with Arduino™ ecosystem, this complementarity helps connect the work performed during development with the requirements that emerge as an Edge AI application progresses toward industrial use.

Extending continuity beyond the compute module

An industrial platform involves more than the compute module itself.

SECO complements SOM-SMARC-Dragonwing-IQ8 with BSP and OS support, embedded engineering expertise, cybersecurity services, long-term lifecycle support, and the Clea software infrastructure. Together, these capabilities are created to extend the platform beyond hardware integration and provide support for the stages that follow application development.

At a software level, Clea provides a foundation for deployment and lifecycle management as Edge AI products move beyond development.

This combination of hardware, software, and engineering support is designed to help SECO address the broader requirements of an industrial product while building on work completed earlier in the development process.

The objective remains the same: avoid unnecessary redevelopment and give the resulting platform a foundation that can support the application as it evolves beyond its initial validation stage.

A common Dragonwing IQ8 Series technology foundation can help reduce development friction, while Arduino is engineered to support rapid development and validation, and SECO is engineered to provide the industrial platform and supporting expertise needed for the next stage.

The value is not in moving between platforms without changes. It is in building on validated application work wherever possible and carrying that engineering investment forward into industrial Edge AI applications.
